SammyQ
Sammy Q lost his owner over two years ago, and since then, he has quietly disappeared into the background.
Day after day, he stayed on the same shelf, rarely moving, rarely interacting, watching the world from a distance. He did not come out to play. He did not ask for attention. For a long time, it felt like he had emotionally shut down after losing the person he trusted most.
But recently, something changed.
After months of a volunteer spending calm, quiet time near him without pressure or expectations, Sammy Q made a choice on his own. He stepped out into the open for the first time. He watched carefully from a distance, then slowly began making biscuits while keeping an eye on the room around him, almost as if he was trying to decide whether it was finally safe.
A little later, he jumped onto the shelf beside her and cautiously asked for pets. He was unsure at first, but each time he pulled away to think, he came back for more. He even gently rubbed against another cat nearby.
That trust is still fragile, but it is there.
We truly believe Sammy Q is ready to open up to the right person — someone patient, calm, and understanding enough to let him move at his own pace. He does not need perfection or constant attention. He simply needs someone willing to exist quietly beside him and allow him to feel safe again.
Because underneath the fear and hesitation, there is still a gentle cat who genuinely wants a connection.

We believe Sammy Q would do best in a calm, quieter home with a predictable routine and patient people willing to give him time to settle in. A low-noise environment without young children would likely help him feel safest while he continues rebuilding confidence and trust.
Midnight
While Midnight is a shy boy, once he begins to trust you, his goofy little personality starts to appear.
He rolls around dramatically, sits in the strangest positions, and sometimes even comes over asking quietly for pets. He absolutely adores other cats — especially Marlowe, who may very well be the most lovable cat-friendly girl in town.
But if you only visit once, you may never see this side of him.
He’ll likely stay hidden, or quickly disappear behind a desk or couch the moment someone enters the room. It’s not because his personality isn’t there — it’s because trust comes slowly for him.
And yet, you can see glimpses of it peeking through.
The slow blinks. The way he watches curiously from a distance. The tiny moments where he wants to be brave, even if he isn’t fully ready yet.
We truly believe Midnight has a full, beautiful personality waiting to blossom for the person willing to move at his pace and see the gentle soul hiding behind the curtains.
What kind of home would help Midnight thrive?
Midnight would thrive in a calm, patient home with someone willing to let him build trust at his own pace. While he may hide at first, gentle understanding and consistency help his sweet, goofy personality slowly emerge.
Because he is extremely cat-friendly, we believe another calm and social cat could help him feel even more safe and confident. If you decided to welcome his beloved Marlowe along too, we’re fairly certain Midnight would not object.
Gem
Gem’s story began in a large hoarding case involving more than 25 cats rescued by Berkeley County Animal Control in 2021. All of the cats were named after precious stones — and somehow, years later, Gem remains the last “gem” still waiting for a forever home.
She is a very gentle girl, but also cautious and reserved with new people. At first, Gem tends to quietly observe from a safe distance, taking her time before deciding whether she feels comfortable enough to trust.
But once she begins to settle and recognize someone as safe, you can start to see little pieces of her personality emerge.
She has slowly begun accepting pets and even enjoys soft butt scratches once she relaxes. Those moments may seem small, but for cats like Gem, they are incredibly meaningful signs of trust. Underneath her shy exterior is a sweet cat who genuinely seems to appreciate affection — she simply needs patience and understanding to feel secure enough to fully let her guard down.
We truly believe Gem has so much more of herself waiting to blossom in the right home with the right person.
After everything she has been through, she deserves the chance to finally feel safe, loved, and chosen.
